Trying to lose weight but when the weekend comes...

Is this you?

Trying to eat better and moving more but then the weekend comes….and with it, eating out, drinking a lot of alcohol and the only veggie in your life is you being a couch potato.

And we all do it. Yes, even nutrition and fitness professionals.

First of all, there is no shame in this! We are busy, stressed and tired — so any opportunity to swap cooking and cleaning for relaxing — we will take it.

But is what you are doing or not doing during those 2-3 days preventing you from reaching your fitness/health goals?

Here are some tips from this mom of 2 (and wine lover) on how to stop the vicious cycle of self sabotaging your goals and enjoying the weekends guilt-free:

#1 Ordering take out? Add a vegetable dish to your usual order. If you are having pizza for example, serve it with a salad or veggie soup or cut up veggies (peppers, carrots, celery, steam broccoli).

#2 Serve your portion and put the food containers away. Have you noticed how easily you go for seconds and thirds when the food is right there at hands reach. The simple step of putting them away in your fridge will make you less likely to mindlessly grab another serving.

#3 Make it a time to connect with your loved ones. Take your time and slow down. Chat about your week, what was a great thing that happened? It is as much about enjoying the company and conversation as it is about enjoying the food. Once you are done eating, make it a family affair to clean up and then watch a movie or do something fun like playing cards.

#4 Do a fun activity that makes you sweat. Get your heart rate up. Go for a walk or hike, sign up for a fun workout (wink, wink!), play a sport, put some music on and bust a move.

Weekends are meant to be enjoyed, to relax and recharge for the week ahead. Don’t feel guilty because what you ate was less than perfect. Take little steps towards bringing more mindfulness and fun into your routine.
